wwp@yahoogroups.com: About the "Sharing" aspect... Markus Altendorff 2005-Oct-21 16:31:00
Hi,

i've followed the discussions over the last few days. Maybe
some additional (technical) info could help to clear things
a bit.

First, the "Kioskmode" switch. As stated before, it keeps
the end user from saving the content IF THE USER ALREADY HAS
QUICKTIME PRO. Otherwise, he/she can't save the content, no
matter if we use kioskmode or not.

Second, the files that we serve to the visitors ARE plain
data files. Any kind of web grabbing software, or even the
"Save all"/"Create web archive" command of some browsers, or
just using "Show Activity" (Safari) or "Page Info/Media"
(Firefox) etc. WILL create a copy of that file on the end
user's computers. No way around that, except maybe trying to
create reference movies, streaming data (not feasible for
QTVR) or other extra work with little payoff and high user
annoyance factor.

So why would i want to keep Kioskmode anyway?
Simply because it removes the additional "technobabble" menu
that people will get if they try all of their mouse buttons
on the panorama ;) (and for non-QT pro users, most of these
items say "You wanna buy QT Pro?" which i consider even
higher on the annoyance scale... :)

And, *if* people decide to download using the Web Archive
option or something like wget, at least they get the
accompanying web site with the description and text :)

Just my 2c...

-Markus
