wwp@yahoogroups.com: IEWebFix Software for Active X problem! Katy Flanagan 2006-Apr-26 16:54:00
Hi everyone,

I'm not a regular observer or contributor to this list, but thought you'd all be interested in
an inexpensive, quick solution to the whole IE/Eolas Active X mess.

I bought IEWebFix in late 2003 and ran it on our site (with tons of pans and video) and
other sites we produced with lots of QT content. At that time the software was only $35.
Well, now that the ugly problem has reared its head again, I wrote to the company, RNSoft
- http://www.rnsoft.com - to see if he had an upgrade. He didn't, but I used my old
version and it worked!

He just informed me that he will be re-issuing the software in a few days. I'd check his
web site, since this was the simplest and fastest solution I found. You can check any of
our content on our site below.

Here's a little clip from his software description back in 2003:

--------------------
"If your website uses active content elements like QuickTime or Flash movies or ActiveX
components you have a problem.

In early 2004 Microsoft will introduce a new version of its Internet Explorer browser for
Windows. The new IE changes the way embeded active content elements behave. Instead
of simply rendering the content elements as part of the layout IE will now prompt the user
for permission before rendering each active element on the page. Elements placed on the
page using <object>, <embed>, or <applet> tags (like QuickTime, Flash, Java and
ActiveX controls) will trigger this new behavior.

The new behavior can be circumvented by moving the offending piece of code to an
external javascript file (that's what this program does). The external file will generate the
tag rather than simply including it as HTML and by doing so will prevent IE from promting
the user. This will ensure the websites will continue to provide a similar experience for all
visitors no matter what browser they are using."
----------------------

Cheers,

kt

PS. Files I made with GoLive 7 or earlier did not close the "object" and "embed" tags, so I
had to run a find and replace for those first. Looks like GoLive CS (ver.8) DOES now close
the tags, so this should be easier in the future.
