wwp@yahoogroups.com:
as the sun sets over the Golden Gate...

Well, that's what it is doing right now where I live. I thought that
would be a nice poetic way of saying that it is time for the
discussion of the initial Fullscreen QTVR proposal to come to an end.
It has been interesting. I have never read nor written so much e-mail
in a week. I launched the discussion when I did partly because I knew
I would have time at home to follow up on it. But now I am back at
work full time and determined to sleep most of each night. Also, I
think almost everyone has had a chance to voice their opinions.
It has been an interesting and useful exercise, giving us all an
insight into the feelings of our peers in the group. I am gratified
to find that the group experience is important to so many. One of the
original aims of the WWP was to promote a feeling of community among
VR producers, and I see it in action now.
Another issue was the sanctity of individual copyright and our
personal creative vision. I was surprised to find how strong a
reaction there was to the FullscreenQTVR-created thumbnails. I
personally do not like this type of thumbnail, but I had overlooked
the fact that it over-rides the vision of the original creator, which
is the most important thing.
The concern to preserve the separate identity of the WWP as a
collaborative non-profit venture was also strongly voiced. The clear
and complete separation of our work from any commercial venture
appeared as a mandate.
The most vexed question (please don't start the debate again just
yet) was whether this form of cross-listing (with every pano on the
WWP appearing on the FSQTVR) would help us or hurt us. We have
informed opinion on both sides of this, and of course many
alternatives in how to handle it most effectively.
The next step will be to ask the Fullscreen QTVR team (VR Way) to
consider our concerns, and together with us craft a new proposal that
will serve all parties well.
VR Way is a key player in the promotion of VR and has done much for
the WWP. Marco Trezzini is sincerely interested in doing this - he
telephoned me from Lugano yesterday to discuss it. Marco is a man
with a great many ideas and infectious enthusiasm. I trust him to
work with us for the common good.
I hope you all read VRMag. Michelle Bienias stays on the sidelines,
but she has been a terrific help to us, authoring many articles in
VRMag about WWP and related subjects.
Hans Nyberg is the other principal player in Fullscreen QTVR, and we
all know his fine work and impressive technical expertise.
So, let's all take a break and wait for the next round. WWP and VRWay
are on the same mission, promoting VR, and I am confident we can
fashion an effective collaboration.
