Not many insects, only right next to streams and lakes. The tundra was dry on the surface, not a big sponge the way it is usually. Of course that may be changing, it started to rain yesterday and is expected to continue through the week. Snow expected within two weeks.

Camped last night right on the Arctic Circle, in a brilliant yellow aspen grove. The fall colors are amazing, the tundra vegetation is purple and red, the deciduous trees shades of yellow and orange.

But I am taking a forced break - my van broke down a mere 56 miles short of Fairbanks, had to get towed in. It could have been a lot worse if it had happened further north, I had just reached pavement after 818 miles of mostly gravel to Deadhorse and back. Hopefully I will be rolling again in a few days (tomorrow is a holiday).

Don
