wwp@yahoogroups.com:
Patent war?
Alex Makienko 2006-Feb-08 15:34:00
Hi All,
I am ready to release my stitching tool - PanoLab.
BUT.
I've decided to review once again all the patent war issues (I have already
the "book" of prints regarding that). From the common sence and scientific
point of view I didn't violate any of existing patens and intellectual
property. I've based on my own research and public domain sources known for
decades. I did not use any of existing source codes (except of JPEG
impotr/export open source library with appropriate reference), etc. etc.
etc. However I suppose that I used the same fundamental geometry equations
as all other developers :-).
But justice and common sence are two different things. We all know that the
term "fisheye" and all basic equations were introduced by prof. Robert Wood
in 19th century but not by IPIX in the end of 20th. We all know that a
general mapping and image stitching technology I've based on exists for
decades and is a public domain for many years. But I am concerned that I am
trying to enter a difefrent world where common sence doesn't work and wheel
becomes known only after issuing appropriate patent... I have no intention
to waste my time and fight with lawers. I may try to release PanoLab for
public but is there a high degree of risk to be involved in the "VR patent
war" what I absolutely do not want to do? We all remember Helmut's story...
:-(
Any ideas or advises?
Cheers,
Alex Makienko
