wwp@yahoogroups.com: Yet another "Border" pano Fotoverkstan / Jakob 2006-Jul-05 18:31:00
I would like to share with you what would have been my contribution to
the Border theme of last March if there weren't so much snow in my part
of the world at that time.

The border you see in this pano from the High Coast World Heritage in
northern Sweden, is the highest shoreline from the time after the last
ice age.

In the direction where you first look, the cliffs are bare and the
vegetation is spare. In the opposite direction the forest is compact and
no cliffs are visible. Right beneath you there is a very distinct border
between the two vegetation types. Where the cliffs are bare the sea
waves once cleared out all soil residues, but above this altitude there
is good soil and a vivid forest.

Here, at altitude 286m above sea level, was the highest shoreline just
after the withdrawal of the thousands of meters thick ice about 10000
years ago. When the ice withdraw, the preassure on the ground
disappeared allowing the ground to start rising. The ground still rises
about 1 meter in 100 years, causing bays and old fishing harbours in the
archipelago nearby gradually turn into lakes.

This very visible geological phenomenon has put this area on the UNESOC
World Heritage list.
