solstice in Times Square, NYC

I'm about to leave NY when I find out there is a dance and yoga celebration in
Times Square to celebrate the solstice on June 21. It is complementary to the
New Year's celebration, which the sponsors are calling the "winter solstice". It
sounds like a community event to me.
What are the rules for photographing there? Can I just go and take pictures or
do I have to get permission or stand in a special place? I can't see how police
could control photographers in such a busy situation with traffic and tourists
and event participants in addition to the normal activity.
Is anyone planning to "do" it?
