wwp@yahoogroups.com: Digital City, Corfu, Greece www.digitalcorfu.com nikos.pachtas 2007-Oct-29 20:04:00
My fellow World Wide Panoramistes,

some of my contributions to the WWP project have been from the Island
of Corfu, as I have been involved in an European Unit funded project
to create a virtual tour for the historic center of Corfu.

The projects URL is : www.digitalcorfu.com

Corfu island is one of the most popular tourism destinations in
Greece. The historic center of its capital (also named Corfu, or
Kerkyra in greek) has resently been inscribed on the UNESCO World
Heritage List, and in my opinion is one of the most beutiful places in
Greece (no, it is not my hometown).

For that project, I have developed the web application and created
about 500 panoramic images, giving the internet user the ability to
virtually visit the city, it's monuments, it's museums, and even its
shops (wanting to emfasise the fact that it is a living city center,
and not an open-space museum). Some of the panoramas that prove tis
statement are :

http://www.digitalcorfu.com/shopdetails.aspx?lang=en&bm=0&id=70&...
(maybe the most pretty barber shop in the world, in the foundations of
an 15th century venetian 5 store building)
http://www.digitalcorfu.com/shopdetails.aspx?lang=en&catid=11&id...
(a liquor store, in the same building)
http://www.digitalcorfu.com/shopdetails.aspx?lang=en&catid=11&id...
(a local artist's workshop)

In this stage the visitor can only see a virtual presentation of the
shop and a slide show of some of its products. We thought that
offering a full e-commerce application was not a todays priority.

Some other intersting places to visit virtually are :

The Spianada Square :

Heroes of the Cyprian Battle Square :

Maitland monument (peristyle) :

The "Liston" : http://www.digitalcorfu.com/vtour.aspx?lang=en&bm=0&id=45
The church of Agios Spiridon :

I have been shooting panoramas for this project since 2004. We are now
in data entering phase, with almost 70% of the matterial entered. And
I am trying to eliminate the last bugs...

Please, when you have time, have a look to the website and tell me
your opinion.

Thank you in advance,

Nikos Pachtas
