I'm not a lawyer and this is posted to help, I am consulted a lot on these matters by schools, multi media producers etc.Its a late start Dieter, but music copyright is very complex to say the least. It comprises seven different sections of copyright law. What we deal with in adding music to panos falls under "Synchronization Rights". According to BMI and SESAC (links below)(recording rights companys) you will need to contact the publisher of the musical performance you wish to use, i.e. the cd publisher ( sony, BMG,Chrysalis). ASCAP and SESAC offer a special license for this purpose (link below), this only is valid for members of their organization. I'm not sure of the music rights organizations in your country but these three are international in scope As this forum is international in scope, I hope these links help all somewhat. Also, Dieter, you live in Germany or France, I presume you could always go to a bigger city to an old book/music dealer, buy
a 17th or 18th Century edition of the sheet music, use Garageband on a Mac or another Music program on a PC and make your own version of the music you wish to use. Its a thought and legal too. Also when you contact the publisher explain who you are and why you want to use the music sometimes they will allow you to use it for free. And always when you get permission put the copyright symbol and used by permission of (the publisher's name) in the notes under your copyright notice. "Fair use" is usually restricted to educational uses which in this case is not applicable as Keith Martin noted.

Sadly it seems that only the music and film industry is organized to fight for their copyright and thats only because large companies make or lose money on it. We as photographers are covered by many of the sections of these laws but are responsible for enforcing them ourselves.

In ending, I don't get to participate in many of these events as I have had strokes that deter me from it , but I wish to thank all those who contribute in their ways to promote this/these events. I would list but its a long one. Thank you all.
