Next Week - Shoot for Diversity!
G. Donald Bain 2009-Mar-14 02:02:00
Yes, it is coming right up - the next quarterly event for the World
Wide Panorama.
The theme this time is "Diversity", proposed by Bostjan Burger of
Slovenia. As always, you may interpret that theme in any way that you
wish - just provide a caption that explains how your panorama
represents diversity.
The shooting period is March 18 through March 23, your local time and
date. You can upload your panorama and create your entry page any time
from March 18 through April 1 (midnight UTC). Pat Swovelin will once
again be the Event Coordinator and editor.
Please share your ideas about "diversity" with other participants on
the WWP discussion list. Let me get the ball rolling...
I am just about to leave for a two week trip in the deserts of eastern
California. Right now I don't have a definite subject in mind, it
depends a lot on where I am during the photography period. But I will
be experiencing an amazing "diversity" of geographic environments,
from the high snowy Sierra Nevada to salt flats in the bottom of Death
Valley. Along the base of these mountain ranges there are huge
alluvial fans of detritus washed down in flash floods - a "diverse"
collection of rock types that spans the geologic history of the earth,
all jumbled together.
One of my particular interests is "biodiversity", and its conservation
through protection of endangered species and their habitats. So I may
try to shoot one of the species of endemic desert fish, some of which
live only in a single spring or small marsh. Or a plant species that
grows only on a single sand dune.
If my desert plans don't work out and I end up in an agricultural or
urban part of California during the shooting period I will look around
for other kinds of diversity. The amazing "diversity" of crops grown
in some areas, as one example, or the "diverse" ethnic and national
origins of the population as another. Tolerance for a "diversity" of
lifestyles is a California hallmark, expressed in houses, vehicles and
clothing as well as behavior. The cityscape itself is an example of
"diversity", with contrasting neighborhoods crammed together.
So, think about your area and your interests, what you see that is
diverse and how it can be portrayed.
Looking forward to another great event!
