wwp@yahoogroups.com: Let the Limits Begin Don Bain 2011-Mar-18 23:55:00
Okay, I know that shooting for Limits is already underway. But I just got back from Hawaii last night.

I encountered lots of limits in Hawaii.

The new eruption on Kilauea prompted the park service to close most of the roads and flightseeing in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, so I never got close to any of the action. Plus the portion of Crater Rim Drive downwind from Halema'uma'u has been closed for years due to noxious fumes. Limited access.

Then two days later there was a tsunami from the earthquake in Japan. When I got back to Kailua most of the businesses on the makai (ocean) side of the main street were closed due to damage. The one big hotel, the King Kamehameha, had the tidal wave run right through the hotel, carrying sand through the restaurant and lobby and on into the street. So my pano-survey of Kailua was strictly limited.

Before the tsunami I shot panos at beautiful Pu'uhonua O' Honaunau National Historical Park (try saying that fast three times), but it has been put off-limits since the tsunami. It seems that the re-arrangment of sand uncovered important new artifacts and the archeologists want to work on it undisturbed.

When I am out shooting panos people are always asking what the heck I am doing, shooting all around like that. So it was a pleasant surprise to meet a fellow panographer one day. It was Jim Scancella on the beach at Waipio - here is the excellent pano he took: http://tinyurl.com/4hrthnn

Now I'm back home in California and need to start looking for new limits.

Aloha,
Don
