wwp@yahoogroups.com: storm delays the WWP (really) G. Donald Bain 2005-Dec-31 18:16:00
An update from WWP headquarters here in Berkeley, California. The
(initial) final version of the Best of 2005 is being generated right
now. It may take a while, as we have made changes that affect the
entire site, so all previous events are being regenerated also. As
soon as the "grabber" finishes I will put the new site up. I had
hoped to get this done a few hours ago, but there have been problems.

A series of powerful storms has been sweeping in from the Pacific
over the west coast, bringing heavy rain and high winds for most of
the last week. This inevitably results in power outages, flooding and
landslides.

I was working at home and almost halfway through final editing of the
WWP Best of 2005 at 8 pm last night when the power went out. No
problem, we just lit candles. I could use my laptop (for a while),
but not my DSL connection, which requires power. So no more editing
for a while.

But after dinner my wife managed to cut herself badly, on a knife in
the sink in the dark. So we rushed down the hill to the hospital,
through the wind-lashed and partly flooded empty streets. The
emergency room was overwhelmed, traffic accidents on top of the
usual, and we didn't finish there until 4 am.

Back home the power was still out, and now (10 am) it is STILL out.

Last I heard from Kat and Landis they were preparing to drive back
from Seattle, about 1000 km through floods and landslides. They live
close to the Petaluma River, which I hear on the radio is beginning
to flood this morning. So there may be more weather-related news from
Landis.

The university has fared better, no outages so far as I know, and the
servers are running as usual. So the Best of 2005 WILL be up,
sometime in the next few hours. I will continue editing later today,
and try to get the press release done. Sorry for the delays.

Don
