It does not matter very much on the SIGMA 8mm.
Even if you leave the focus at infinity you get depth of field from 
0.8m to infinity at full aperture.

Thats not the problem with the Sigma and sharpnes.

The important is to treat the images right.
Use Raw files  and remember to not underexpose to much or use noise 
creating ASA settings as you have to push the edges about 1 aperture 
more.
Also remove chromatic abberation.
