wwp@yahoogroups.com: Best Of 2008 is ... about to open! (server technical info) Yahoo Account 2008-Dec-18 07:49:00
Hi, this is Markus writing, your (somewhat tired) WWP web mechanic ;)

With only 10 minutes to go until the Best Of 2008 preparation phase begins, I'd like to announce a change of address: our new prep server is now at:

http://contribute.worldwidepanorama.org/gen/

If you have bookmarked the former geoimages.berkeley.edu:8090/gen , then you'll find a short notification with this new address there, too.

Your user name and password remain the same. Since this server does not use the unusual high-range port number (8090) of the previous one, those unlucky few with connection problems due to firewalls or other limitations should see an improvement, too.

This new server required some changes "under the hood" which should NOT affect you at all. If you notice problems or odd behavior (e.g. error messages or similar things), please notify me. Testing the range of usual interaction (upload, editing, etc.) showed no problems, but there's always the chance that I might have missed an obscure bug. Also, we don't have any experience yet as to how well it'll stand up to the huge amount of incoming panoramas that we're hoping for :)

For those interested in Creative Commons, we've added a "licensing" information input. Remember, Creative Commons is NOT open source: your panorama will always remain in your copyright.
If you want to, you can choose to grant extra permissions in addition to the obvious "the WWP may show it on its website". The selector is (for now) a notification box on your profile page with a link, but this will be integrated into the panorama upload page as soon as I get around to program it.

Even if you are NOT interested in the Creative Commons idea, please take the few moments necessary to visit this page and put your grant of usage rights on the record. Thank you.

I'm sure there will be other announcements coming, so stay tuned :)

Thank you for your participation!

-Markus
