In my case it would be no problem to have a speaker icon or whatever
indicating sound was playing; plus the ability to turn it off with a mouse
click.

Good idea. I'll try to incorporated that.

  I had no idea there was sound with the pan before.  I leave my
  headphones permanently plugged into my computer and not usually on my
head.
  When adding sound is it possible to add a visual image or object to show
  it is playing plus it would be good for those that do have speakers to
  have something to click to mute or pause the sound.  This would be
  pretty difficult with embedded directional sounds, but us with
  headphones a little animated gif showing a sound wave or something, so I
  know to listen.
