While that used to be true... the local phone companies now use 
residential repeater boxes that effectively extend that distance.

Copper wire is copper wire whether it transports cable TV or 
telephone conversations or dial up or adsl modems.  How can that be ?

[note fiber optics is another topic]

Because that telephone wire is now being filtered to remove the 
static pop's and cracks which degrade the signals.  At one time, a 
telephone line had to have a signal booster and filter installed 
every 1/2 mile of phone wire.  Better filters and signal boosters 
have enabled a signal to be sent faster and more reliable.

Computers and modem signals send data packets at the "speed of 
light", only to be slowed down by slow routers and unfiltered copper 
wire.
