wwp@yahoogroups.com:
DSL speed and distance from TEL CO

While that used to be true... the local phone companies now use
residential repeater boxes that effectively extend that distance.
Copper wire is copper wire whether it transports cable TV or
telephone conversations or dial up or adsl modems. How can that be ?
[note fiber optics is another topic]
Because that telephone wire is now being filtered to remove the
static pop's and cracks which degrade the signals. At one time, a
telephone line had to have a signal booster and filter installed
every 1/2 mile of phone wire. Better filters and signal boosters
have enabled a signal to be sent faster and more reliable.
Computers and modem signals send data packets at the "speed of
light", only to be slowed down by slow routers and unfiltered copper
wire.
Are we having fun yet??
