wwp@yahoogroups.com:
WWP Rules
Landis 2006-Jan-09 21:14:00
There's been a bit of discussion lately about the rules of the WWP.
I like to think of them mostly as guidelines and not laws, but there
are definitely reasons that we have the rules that we have.
-=-=-=-
Photography Period - we have a specific period for you to do your
photography. This is one of the primary principles of the World Wide
Panorama. We have turned down a number of great entries because they
didn't fall within the appropriate time period.
The discussion that arose regarding Michel Thoby's Micromegas object
movie was a good exercise in pointing out these rules. We clearly
stated that the photography had to be done within the proper time
period - if your entry is not strictly photographic you should have
created the contribution during the proper time period. I contacted
Michel and offered him the opportunity to upload something that fell
within the time period and he graciously declined and withdrew his
last contribution. These changes will take effect when we upload the
final edition of the site in the next 24 hours.
---
QTVR Format Only - we're not going to make exceptions to that. One
plug-in required to browse the site, one format for all participants
to have to author.
---
File Sizes - now that the server has been set up to remind you of
proper file sizes and restrict entries above a certain size this is
much less of a problem. Sometimes object movies may require a larger
size. Optimize it as best you can, but contact us directly and we
may be able to make an exception.
---
Theme - the last event was a little different, but most events have a
theme. We really prefer to have captions, but when your entry may
not be obviously connected to the theme, a caption will go a long way
towards explaining your reasoning. Please pay attention to the theme
and remain true to your interpretation of that theme.
---
Editing Deadline - we have a deadline for completing your editing on
your contribution for the World Wide Panorama. After that deadline
has passed we finalize the site, editing for consistency, clarity,
and sometimes spelling and grammar. We then upload the latest update
to the WWP by the date we say it will be published.
We have always had a 'late editing' period that lasts anywhere from a
couple days to a week. We prefer not to have to do this, but
understand that there are good reasons that you may need it. This
last time we had 46 people who requested it. I'm fine with that
because I'd rather err on the side of inclusion whenever possible.
But there were 13 people who requested it and did not take advantage.
Please try to complete your editing and uploading by the original
deadline. And only ask for late editing if it's absolutely necessary
and you're going to take advantage of it.

In short (thanks Markus):
A) Whichever panorama/object follows the rules and isn't too
objectionable due to content WILL be allowed
B) You can't "break" those rules. If your contribution falls outside
the rules' lines, ASK. You MAY be allowed. There is NO right to an
exception, and NO prior exception made for someone else or yourself
will expand the rules.
C) So, in effect: Contrary to what most people think about rules and
laws, those rules do not declare what is FORBIDDEN. They define what
will be ACCEPTED by default. Anything else is at the admin's whim ;)
