Hi all,
Most of you probably know that the term "panorama" goes back to a patent of
the British painter Robert Barker in 1787. He patented the way of showing a
painted, cylindrical image in a cylindrical building which was called
"panorama". These panoramas were very popular in the 19th century. They were
a kind of one of the first mass media of that time and also influenced the
beginnings of photography.
Only a few original panoramas survived to this day (around 20), only 3 are
completely intact. The panorama in Innsbruck/Austria is one of them. There
are plans to remove the painting from the original building and place it
somewhere else.
At http://tinyurl.com/68upcn (in German) you will find a petition for the
preservation of the panorama in Innsbruck. I invite you to sign the
petition.
Thanks and best regards from Switzerland,
Matthias
