wwp@yahoogroups.com: Effective copyright protection Madeena 360 2004-Aug-01 10:56:00
I'm glad Don's copyright issue was resolved quickly and minimal harm was
done. Knowing how to protect our work is vital especially if it is our
bread and butter.

Most of the recent posts talked about the legal issues on how to protect
copyright and the steps that need to be taken.

There are also known steps that most people on the list know like adding the
'kioskmode' and 'cache' tags to the object & embed or to 'save disable'
using plugin helper(free download from Apple Quicktime tools section
-Mac/PC) or the expensive way by using Live Stage Pro. This feature does not
allow anyone to alter the movie file, but can still make copies of it.

I consider the following way as THE MOST EFFECTIVE way I've seen recently. I
learnt it from "Interactive Quicktime: Authoring wired media" by Mathew
Peterson.

Mathew has a couple of pages on how to protect your movie files by using a
sprite that detects where the file is playing from and act accordingly.

You can specify a certain url in your sprite script and every time the movie
is opened, it checks the url. If it is in the right url, you see the movie
as the author intended. If it was downloaded on a computer or moved to
another url, it disables the video and audio track and shows an alternative
video track showing a warning. It sounds too good to be true, but it works.
Try it yourself:

You won't have problems saving the movie from this html page on your
computer but when you open it again you'll see something different. This
sprite also detects what version of QT you are using and directs you to
download the latest version if you are using QT 5 or lower.

I don't know if I copy and pasted the script and instructions from the book,
will it be considered 'fair use' or not. So either:

-Buy the book, which I highly recommend.

OR

-I found the same idea taken from the book but the script was re-written in
a different way on the QuickTiming.org website:

I'd be interested to know if anyone on the list could try and crack it to
see if it is 100% reliable.
