wwp@yahoogroups.com: hello from the far, far North Don Bain 2010-Sep-04 04:27:00
Just had to tell everyone where I am tonight. Two days drive due north from Fairbanks, mostly unpaved, to the end of the road at Deadhorse, Alaska. The northernmost public road in the world, 300 miles past the Arctic Circle!

Beautiful weather and great scenery, fall colors in full glory, have seen caribou and musk ox! But just in the last 20 miles I ran into the Arctic Ocean fog bank, freezing cold and blowing hard. So I am having dinner in the Arctic Caribou Inn (a bunch of trailers grafted together), which has internet. Cell phone also. Amazing.

Tomorrow after a tour of the Prudhoe Bay oil fields, I start home - almost 5000 miles (8000 km).

Saw a great "crossroads" possibility, though too early. Where the Dalton Highway (the Haul Road built for the Alaska Highway), which brought me here, crossed the Yukon River, the traditional highway across Alaska and the Yukon.

Don
