wwp@yahoogroups.com: forest ideas Don Bain 2011-Mar-08 03:46:00
Sorry to have been filling your in-boxes with my announcements today. I am involved in a lot of VR-related projects, and have just this one day of internet access in the middle of a trip.

I just posted about the International Year of Forests year-long event. This was Bostjan's idea (and UNESCO's), and he has already given an example of what he might submit. I really like his idea of four seasons in the same forest.

But of course, some places just do not have four seasons. Many tropical areas have just wet and dry seasons, as do Mediterranean climates. And trade-wind islands like Hawaii, where I am right now, are pretty much the same year around.

So in my remaining two weeks in Hawaii, what shall I shoot? There are spectacular tree fern forests high on the windward slopes of the mountains, really beautiful. I will try for one of those.

The native mountain forests of koa and ohia are interesting, but not too photogenic. Downwind from the active Kilauea volcano the ohia forest has been decimated by acid rain into what looks like near desert, ugly but interesting.

There are planted forests in the forest reserves that have become quite impressive, with swamp gum eucalyptus from Australia, redwoods from California, and sugi pine (Cryptomeria) from Japan.

I will see what luck I have with the various Hawaiian forests, but I don't want to use up all my four entries. I will probably submit one or two from California, and maybe one from Canada or Alaska next fall. After all we have an entire year to plan and travel and consider which of our efforts are best and most significant.

Who else has ideas about shooting forests?
