The World Wide Panorama - Details

A world-wide panorama shoot on March 20, 2004
This will be the last general announcement to multiple lists.
The idea is simple. Just photograph a VR image (cylindrical or cubic
panorama, or an object movie) anytime during the 24 hour period of
Saturday, March 20, local time. Prepare your best, most interesting VR,
in QTVR format, and send it to us for inclusion on the web site.
We would like everyone to register beforehand (through Yahoo Groups,
see below), and it will be important to provide us with accurate
information about yourself and your subject when submitting your
panorama (details forthcoming on the web site).
RULES AND RESTRICTIONS
We need to keep this simple so we can bring it off without unreasonable
effort. So there are some strict limits on what will be accepted.
QTVR format only. Sorry, no java, javascript, Flash, or Shockwave. We
need to be able to simply plug in QTVR movie files and a few text
blocks, without the complication of additional code. We also want
consistent navigation and interface. If your artistic vision goes
beyond our simple pages, we will provide a link to your site.
Mostly panoramas. We are assuming most people will do a panorama of a
real place - both cylinders and cubics are welcome. But various types
of object movies are acceptable also. Anything that can be included
entirely within a QTVR file is okay - auto-rotate, floating logo,
label-type hotspots, url hotspots that refer to a page on another site.
Single-nodes only. This is a file size/bandwidth consideration. You can
use url-hotspots to make your panorama on this site the beginning page
of a multi-node series, as long as the other nodes are on another site
(URL-hotspots should open a new browser window).
Dimensions and file size. We don't want to stifle your creativity, but
we do have to specify some limits so we can fit all the panoramas on
the same size pages. We will also specify maximum file sizes, to keep
download times (and server bandwidth) under control. The World Wide
Panorama web site will have specific information (see below).
Full-screen. We can host a single "full-screen" version of your
panorama, to pop up in a separate window - see Hans Nyberg's
full-screen panoramas of the week for inspiration
(http://panoramas.dk).
Deadlines. Only the shooting needs to be done on E-Day (the equinox,
March 20). Everyone needs some time to produce their panorama,
especially if just beginning with QTVR, or using film. So the deadline
for submission won't be until April 2, almost two weeks later. We hope
to have a preliminary version of the site up by Monday, April 5, and
the final site by April 12.
LEGAL
Each photographer will retain personal copyright of their own work (as
specified in U.S. law). You will need to grant us permission to use
your work on this one site (http://geoimages.berkeley.edu/wwp.html). We
will make no further use of your images without contacting you for
permission. There will be no commercial use at all. There will be
warnings to users about respecting your copyright. The overall site
will automatically be copyright by the Regents of the University of
California.
