wwp@yahoogroups.com: Suggestions to improve cylindrical pano? Allan Jost 2004-Oct-01 14:58:00
Hello:

I am brand new to this group , and have just submitted a bridge pano
to the site, but I am a little disappointed in the quality of what I
have, especially when I look at many of the other panos on the
preview site.

Basically, this is a "cylindrical" pano (i.e. the "up" and "down" are
not filled in. It was shot with a Canon G3 in wide angle mode,
portrait orientation, which resulted in 16 images I had to stitch
together, and I have never found any information outlining how to put
together a full 360 pano (i.e. with full top and bottom) except with
6(?) images taken with a fisheye lens. I'm not even sure if I can
get a fisheye for my camera (it would have to be an "adaptor"), but
that is really not this issue I have with my current image.

The problem is the distracting black areas at the top and bottom
(especially in the sky area at the top). I could crop the whole image
rectangularly so none of it is visible, but I wanted to make sure at
least some of the bridge span was visible all the way across, and if
I crop it based on those frames, there will be missing image at the
top at other parts because the stitch seems to have a bit of a "warp"
to it.

I know I could use PhotoShop to clone in some more sky in the black
areas, and I know how to get an editable PS file of the stitch, but
even if I could find the time (hopefully this weekend) to do this
work, I really don't know how to convert the edited PS file back to a
VR pano. I am using PTMac, which is based on "PanoTools").

Any and all suggestions are welcome. I don't see my image on the
preview site yet, but have another copy of the standard version up at:
http://jost-g4.cs.dal.ca/~jost/AllanJost.mov .

Thanks in advance,
Allan
