Trouble with large file size in Pano2qtvr

I've got an equirectangular image (my first) for the current WWP event
which is just over 21 MB and is giving me no end of grief converting it
to qtvr.
it was shot in jpeg as it is, so when I tried to resize the image I
lost a whole bundle of data and the resultant qtvr is poor quality.
When I've tried to convert the original the computer takes 24 hours to
process and then crashes. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have also tried to convert the image to cubic in order for me to
correct the zenith and nadir, but the computer stalled after 4 hours.
I've got a bit of a gap in the zenith, and my feet are visible in the
nadir (which I've decided I'd rather just leave alone for fun).
