Actually, probably not. I understand your thinking and I really don't
mean to sound like a kill-joy, but wherever they're from and however
un-genius-like they may be, images will have automatic copyright.
(The idea that an image must be of a certain aesthetic quality to be
protectable is not one I'd care to make in front of a copyright
lawyer or a judge! It also opens up a whole can o' worms regarding
aesthetic judgement... :-)
It is also worth saying that I personally see this as barely a drop
of rain compared to the ocean of infringement that we've experienced.
