This sounded like a better tool than VRMakePano and it certainly has
some clear instructions.
however I tried it with the PTStitcher that came with PTGUI and the
PTStitcher with panorama tools 2.5a
and in both cases it comes up with an error saying I am using a version
of panorama tools that does not support wide angle views.

I tried images of two sizes:
14472 x 7236 and half that: 7236 x 3618 and 40%: 5788 x 2892
All gave the same error message :(

Don't know - I did not do anything to put hot spots in and VRMakePano
has no options - nothing.

Well, ok, there are 12 images for a single row 360 cylindrical (I was
rotating by hand on a small tripod and
trying for good enough overlap to enable easy stitching).

It's 21MB and here: http://www.planet-earth.org/wwp/send.zip

cheers,
and thanks for the advice,
