wwp@yahoogroups.com: WWP Equipment Stats Tim Hatch 2006-Apr-18 21:11:00
Hi all,

Just in case others are interested, I've compiled a rough list of
equipment used in the latest WWP event. It's really rough, with a
lot of items unspecified, but that's inherent in the data provided to
the freeform fields in the WWP pages. (I started writing something
to generate a histogram of photography times but that's a can of
worms for another day!) Equipment stats are available at
http://timhatch.com/projects/wwp-equipment/ in two formats:

  * HTML with links to the entries, ordered separately by popularity
of camera body, lens, panohead, tripod, and software.
  * CSV in case you want to do your own analysis

The short version of the results is:

> The top camera is the Nikon D70 with 35 known entries, followed by
> the Canon 20D with 19. The top two lenses are almost a tie between
> the Sigma 8mm and Nikkor 10.5mm, with mine (the Nikon FC-E8) coming
> in third. Another interesting statistic is that homemade/custom/
> handheld panoheads outnumber those with specific models by a good
> number.

Corrections are welcome: I'm well aware that the lens notation is
weird/wrong, but I hope it's halfway readable. I was aiming for a
format that was easy to machine-parse and hadn't considered all the
types when I started. I may produce a summary table for brands if
anyone is interested -- this would especially help RealViz Stitcher,
which appears artificially lower in the rankings due to most users
specifying a specific version.

Tim
