Hello,
this is not 100% true.
(TM) means trademark, that's right. But (R) means registered Trademark!
You can use the (TM) to show others that the brand, logo, slogan is
your own creation and your intellectual property and protected by
international laws. It is also often used to show others that the
Trademark is currently in registration process. You can check this by
asking the uspto-databases: http://www.uspto.gov/
