It's possible :)
I made my first panos (all cubic) with a Canon G3 (wide 35mm like your Ixus)
The problem aren't the zenith and nadir shots, but you must plan a lot of shots to have
enough overlap between images.
I usually took 4 rows of 12 shots every 30 degrees, at +60, +20, -20, -60 (sometimes 5
rows: +60, +30, 0, -30, -60), plus 1 zenith and "some" nadir shots to close the panohead
gap.
Important: you'll need a panoramic head, in case you haven't already one.
And a lot of patience stitching 50 or more photos...

Why I then bought a fisheye and a DSLR camera? Because I wanted to include people in the
panos, to have shorter shooting time, less stitching work, better lens, no more moving sun
shadows, etc.
But I was happy with my first cubic works!
