Panoramas with Nikon D70 (or other SLR)

My panos for the last event were shot with the Coolpix 8700.
The Coolpix has a special mode called Pnaorama. In that mode
all adjustments of the first picture are hold until the last pict.
Now I've received the Nikon D70.
Has anybody experiences with panoramas made with Nikons D100 or D70?
Which is the best way -> Auto / M/A/S/P?
Should I fix something when I shoot about 14 pictures for the 360??
When you shoot for panos with a SLR-camera, what adjustments
do you use?
My first test brought problems to me, because the colors in the
pictures changed strong from pict to pict!?
