I used a Coolpix 950 and have now a D70.

If you want to shoot every picture of your pano with the same exposure 
like the first one just use M. First, I use an automatic mode like A to 
select the aperture and take a look at the speed I point the lens in 
all directions. If the speed stays nearly constant then I switch to M 
and use the average speed setting. If I want to be very quick and the 
panorama is outdoors then point the camera at 90 degrees to the sun, 
set the exposure in M mode and fire away (risky, depends on the amount 
of shadow in the panorama).

If you use a tripod you can use bracketing in mode A. Set it to 3 
frames at +1 for example. Then make three pictures from the same 
position.
