Our security people were intrigued, never having seen a hacked Mac
before, either.
As far as we can determine it was probably my carelessness. I used ftp
(an insecure protocol) to access the site, logging on with an
administrator account. Presumably the password was "sniffed" and then
used to log on. Only a few files were changed, so it was not a
particularly malicious intrusion.
Of course we must assume the hackers installed a backdoor and maybe
other invisible changes. So the only safe course is to reformat the
drive and install from scratch. I will be swapping in a backup server
today, and getting started with the lengthy but uncomplicated
procedure.
