I have sent an e-mail to the new manager asking him not to do anything  
with this server. The chairman of the department promised me that it  
would be left running indefinitely without interference.

I think the new guy did not have any malicious intent, he probably  
thought he was making a small improvement. Hopefully now he will see  
the problems that can cause and will in future leave all server admin  
to Markus.
