Hmm. On Saturday I gave three seminars at the Society of Young
Publishers Conference 2009 at Oxford Brookes University, on 'Design
as visual language'. I wasn't paid (other than a bottle of wine as
thanks at the end) but I certainly didn't have to pay and my travel
expenses were covered.
Frankly, if I was going to speak at any conference I would
point-blank refuse to pay to go. But [sigh] I would be less surprised
to run up against this in an academic conference than in a regular
industry conference.
