Well, actually... Not really.
I really don't want to rain on anyone's parade, and I am as gratefull as all
of you to Landis, Don, etc, and even as proud as the rest of you that I
participated, but I have my doubts about a quaterly event. Here's why:
The first WWP this year got HUGE exposure. There were links on countless
weblogs, which in these days is a measure of coolness. * EVERYBODY * who saw
the huge collection of panoramas was wowed. Many people will have seen
QTVR's for the first time.
This will be very different if 'we' do this four times each year. Sure, the
first couple of times will be very popular, but I think the 'effect' will
wear off after some time. People will go 'didn't I see this a couple of
weeks back?' or 'oh, another set of panoramas, well, they all look the same
to me'.
I think we should not do a WWP event too often. This way they will stay
special, both to our intended audience, and to participating photographers.
I also think that a theme is very important (like the current WH theme), to
keep people interested. It could be a good idea to have the themes related
to something that is on people's minds already. A 'sports' themed event
would have been a good idea for an august based shoot, coinciding with the
Olympic games (but I think that may be too soon, taking away attention from
our current WWP site).
Opinions?
