I am leaving town again tomorrow, five days this time, traveling
through Yosemite to the deserts of eastern California with my students.
When I get back I will be able to concentrate on the site for a while.
Since Landis is now in New Zealand, that leaves just Markus to field
questions for a few days. But given the superb design of the
preparation server, and the willingness of members of this group to
jump in and answer questions for each other, I do not foresee problems.
Thanks, Markus!
Another note - in previous events we had spikes of demand that
overwhelmed the server. Actually, it was the network subnet it is on. I
have been looking into moving it to the university's colocation
facility, a high security bunker with superb connectivity. But I have
just found out that our local routers are due for replacement, which
could improve performance without physically moving the server.
One last item - please do not spend a lot of time browsing the site as
it is being built. The prep server is not the main server, and it's
performance will suffer if a couple of hundred people are
simultaneously asking for dynamically generated pages. When the site is
final, we freeze it to static html and move it to the Geo-Images
server. Then we can take on the world.
