I do not use the default cubefaces for the size of the equirectangular.
The default for 6000x3000 is as you say 1908x1908
I use 6000x3000 but I set the cubefaces manually to 1500x1500.
This gives in my opinion a better resolution all over the cubeface.
When you use the default size the areas of the cube face corners will
not have full resolution.
