Answering my own post now!
I bought a Peleng. It works fine on my D50. No mirror collisions.
Seems sharp and nice. Lens flare is an issue but as I have never used
another fisheye I have no way on knowing how this might compare to a
much more expensive lens. Certainly fun to be able to do 360*180 pans
with a monopod and 4 shots rather than a tripod and several dozen shots!
Auto focus and exposure seems rather pointless on a lens of this focal
length used for this purpose. I always shoot focused at the
"hyperfocal distance" (a good scale is provided for this) and just
leave the aperture ring closed down. I take a couple of test shots
using the histogram on the view to judge the best exposure for the
complete pan.
