I've done this for the borders event:

The only challenge is if you want to have an equal sized transition 
going through nadir and zenith. You need to transform a simple 
photoshop gradient to an equirectangular mask...

This should be possible for more than two panoramas as well: Use the 
same mask shifted to the right or left.

Carsten had the same idea, but he used a subject detail as border:

But there is always the possibility to do it as cylindrical:
