Good point, Peter. I confess I don't know the answer to that.

One option is often used, though. The instructions for panning in the image
are on the page directly below the pano. I've also seen the panos that
rotate on startup but don't start up again after the viewer initially pans.
I personally find these acceptable. My real grievance is the ones that start
up again.

Is there a sprite or whatever that would display a text in the image to let
the user know they can interactively pan which goes away after panning once
in the image?

But what makes you so sure, that a not rotating pano 
is not taken for an  image ? 

This would be a great task for a usability lab.
