WWPano: another world wide panorama, anyone?
G. Donald Bain 2004-May-25 18:57:00
The first World Wide Panorama was an amazing success. Great numbers of
people around the world have been enjoying the site. Congratulations
and thanks to everyone who participated!
We are considering a repeat event, similar to the first, for the coming
Solstice (summer in the northern hemisphere, winter in the southern),
which falls on June 20-21.
The theme of the first WWPano was implicit - photographers around the
world taking VR photos on the same day. The theme of the June 2004
World Wide Panorama will be "World Heritage".
Many of you will be aware of Tito Dupret's project to photograph
(including VR photographs) UNESCO World Heritage Sites. He has been
traveling for the last several years, producing amazing panoramas of
Angkor in Cambodia, the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, many places in
China, and most recently in Sri Lanka. Tito's site, WHTour
(http://www.world-heritage-tour.org/) is rapidly becoming an
outstanding archive of images of our common cultural heritage.
But Tito could use some help -- there are 754 officially designated
sites, scattered all around the world. So he has invited us to join him
in this project. The combined talents of the World Wide Panorama
participants can make a huge contribution, all in one weekend. The full
UNESCO list is at:
http://whc.unesco.org/nwhc/pages/sites/main.htm
What if you are eager to participate, but don't have an official world
heritage site close enough? No problem, you are free to select anywhere
that you deem to fit the theme of "World Heritage".
We will use the Yahoo Grouo ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wwp/) and
the web site at http://geoimages.berkeley.edu/wwp.html to communicate
about this project. Details will be posted soon, both to the list and
on the site.
In brief: shoot on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, June 19-20-21, produce
a QuickTime VR panorama or object, and submit it to the WWPano
organizers (once again, Don Bain and Landis Bennett), for incorporation
into the site.
The project is sponsored by the Geography Computing Facility,
University of California Berkeley, and will be hosted by The Geo-Images
Project. Although this remains a non-profit venture, we will be
collaborating with the FullScreen QTVR site, and asking your permission
to host WWPano images also on that site.
Looking forward to another great event!
