"Accept no substitutes - get the WWP original maps straight from

only 8.95! All legal!

On an unrelated topic:
I'm currently in the early design stage for a web interface to
make things easier for Don and Landis (and me). The idea is to
hand out a username and a password to each participant who wants
to join a WWP event.

So, you intend to shoot a panorama for the next WWP (or it's in
the week-and-half after the deadline, and you've got your
panorama ready). You'd fill out an online form with your name and
email contact. Don or Landis will then create a username and a
password and send it to the email address given. (if you've got
your "account", but didn't get around to actually shoot, you
don't have to do a thing - the system will NOT generate an empty
page if a panorama for a member is missing ;-)

With this user/pass combo, you would be able to log on to a
secondary, non-public database/web server to upload your panorama
file(s) through the web browser and enter the texts. Similar to
the FTP server, only that you'll just need a web browser and
nothing else.

There will be a "live" preview including map pointers and viewing
the page as it's going to look later.
Editing and updating will be possible at any time and in real
time up to a pre-set deadline for an event, after which this WWP
event will be "frozen" to static HTML and transferred to the
official server. There will be some admin control (i.e. Landis is
going to be notified of changes to check things like spelling or
excessive descriptions ;), but basically this thing should be
able to run on "autopilot" most of the time.

We're also thinking about including an option (!) to have a
"behind the scenes" story pop-up for a panorama (like the thing
we did on the mailing list earlier), and a "personal" page for
the photographer (linked from the panorama, with e.g. contact
information, resume or whatever, and a list of panoramas
submitted) optionally (!) including a small portrait photo.
Nobody *has* to provide that much information, of course. Just
submitting a panorama without talking about it will always be
possible.

I can't promise that this whole thing's going to be ready in time
for the next round, but i'll try. Don has generously provided a
spare server for me to play around with ;-) - thanks a lot!

Some questions:

- does anybody already know that (s)he will have trouble
accessing a web upload form? Of course, submitting by FTP will
still be possible, but we're trying to automate as much as can be
reasonably done

- anybody knowing that contacting a web server at a "high port"
like http://www.example.com:8080/no_file_here will *not* work
with her/his local firewall?

- anybody with strong opposition to online forms, due to
considerations of online bills or something?

OK, that's it for today. Going to bed now:
Markus
