Gardens: That's a wrap; Coming up next

All,
I can't thank you all enough for your participation in this most
recent WWP event. Gardens has turned out fantastic! With a final
count of 317 contributions it's second in participation only to Best
of 2005, and this event was only open for 5 days instead of a whole
year. So congratulations to all of you for a job well done. It was
great to see gardens and also some very creative interpretations of
gardens from all over the globe.
The final iteration of the site is now live with a couple additions
(Don!) and minor changes from the original release on 4 July. Please
have a look and don't forget the Google Earth placemark. The newest
placemark (downloadable from http://geoimages.berkeley.edu/wwp_all/
index.html) will automatically update from now on with each new
event. So if you've already got it since Gardens debut right-click
and 'refresh' your link since a couple coordinates have been changed
thanks to our geographic editor Thomas Rauscher (Thanks Thomas!).
Final site stats:
- 692 people have participated in at least one event
- 2,322 separate contributions!
- 317 participated in Gardens
- 26 people have contributed to all 10 events (and another 16 have
been with us for at least 9)!
Coming up next:
The next event is 20-24 September with the theme 'Transportation'.
We've looked at the many suggestions for themes on the YG database
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wwp/database) (including Mobility,
Movement/Dynamics, Railway, Road, Traffic, Train Stations of the
World) and rolled them into one theme that we hope will give us all
some creative challenges and some extremely interesting takes on the
subject from around the world. The essay is currently missing, but I
will get to that in the next 2 weeks (really, I promise). Other than
that all of the information on the next theme can be found in the
usual place (http://geoimages.berkeley.edu/wwp/practical/
NextEvent.html). Also please remember that I keep up to date an iCal
Calendar (works w/ Outlook and any others that read ics files) for
WWP deadlines, etc, at webcal://icalx.com/public/Landis/WWP.ics
After Transportation in September we will once again offer a 'Best
of' in lieu of a 4-7 day themed event. We really feel that this
gives the WWP community a chance to participate with their favorite
work done at any time in the last year. We've seen some great stuff
in the past and will see much more in the future. So keep spinning
and looking all around you for the moment that will give you your
Best of 2006 contribution.

Finally I want to offer a deep and sincere thanks to Markus for his
amazing work on the WWP Prep Server. This awesome bit of software
has really enabled all of us to create this WWP community and we're
incredibly lucky to have such a capable, thorough, and giving person
working with us. He has spent many, many (many!) hours at the
keyboard to make this project what we see today and to make the rest
of our jobs all that much easier. Thank you Markus!
I've got a couple of other things that I want to reply to about web
rings, comments, badges, etc. But that will have to wait until
tomorrow. I've got some paying work to do for a little while now. :)
Once again, thank you to everyone. Now to actually 'look' at all the
contributions. :)
