On the way home, the flight was delayed. Sitting around the airport for seven hours, I met a guy from Nigeria, who lived in Jamaica. He complained that life in Jamaica was far too violent (compared to Nigeria!). Guns everywhere. Where do the guns come from? Many of them are hidden in shipments of rice (charity food aid). The rice is then taken and sold. I have no official documentation of this but it seems quite plausible to me.

As far as I can tell (without being an expert on the matter) these Charities are essentially doing the opposite of what they intend. Thank Bob Geldof and Bono, I guess, for promoting it to such a degree...
If you want to help poor people, you should lend them money directly to start their own business. www.kiva.org is a good start.
