Mini Disc recorder is the optimal sound recording device with me. I do use it for four years - now I have the 'second' generation, which can be plug-in PC/Mac via USB as external disc. The price of about 200 EURO or even less for a new one is very reasonable price when you get also cheap external storage media. Very handy for a travel backup as I do (still) not have a CD/DVD burner on my notebook. When the MD is full I do send it home as the backup but also keeping images on the HD of my notebook. The second way I do record the sound is with the camera...

Jim,

if you're to go for ambient sound any voice recorder
in the 11kHz band won't do it, go for sth that has a broader
dynamic range. The better the quality of your
input device and your recorder te better the sound when
processed. I use a mini-disc and stereo microphones and
havn't heard of an mp3 player with a decent line-in dynamic
range, maybe someone else has?
you can find second-hand minidiscs easily and a very decent
micropjone can be bought for 75-100$
results can be heard here:

a voice recorder would make it sound like a 1995 modem
