Well, I'm about equal distance from either Redwoods NP or Yosemite
NP, and unfortunately I don't have the time to take off for more than
a day-trip. I'm thinking of areas that aren't official UNESCO sites,
but very well represent cultural heritage.
Still thinking of:
* The Golden Gate Bridge
* Angel Island - Ellis Island of the West
* Fort Ross - farthest extent of the Russian Empire in North America
* Sonoma Plaza - site of the Bear Flag Revolt to break away from Mexico
* Some place representative of the Sonoma and Napa Wine Country
Any other SF Bay Area participants want to divvy up the area to make
sure that we don't all go to the same place? (Or maybe we could all
meet up at the same place, that might be just as fun).

Somebody mentioned seeing a list of UNESCO sites under consideration.
Does any one have links to that?

Bo, Good luck finding "cultural heritage" in Southern California! :)
I'm just kidding, I think you've got a good chance of finding plenty
of great places. Actually I just read in the newspaper today about
an event happening next Monday which has a good chance of being quite
representative in the near future: the launching of Space Ship One
from Mojave. Burt Rutan is hoping to win the X-Prize
(http://www.xprize.org) by sending a private 3-passenger space ship
to an altitude of 62-miles (100 km) to foster in the age of space
tourism. The event will be open to the public.
