Dan,

Thanks for your sustenance.

This wider interpretation is natural for me, so I was a bit surprised
when reading the WWP definition.

Jakob,

Sustenance can have a wide definition. My dictionary
defines it as follows:

1a. The act of sustaining. b. The condition of being
sustained. 2. The supporting of life or health;
maintenance. 3. Something, especially food, that
sustains life or health. 4. Means of livelihood

I think when most Americans hear the word sustenance
by itself, they think it's a fancy, somewhat poetic
word for food. :) It's not a word most people use in
everyday speech or writing.

Sustenance can mean anything that sustains (supports,
maintains, fuels, makes continue) something else.

Some non-food examples for me might be: The love of
my wife and family sustains me in life. Cycling and
exercise sustain my health. My passion for
photography sustains my livelihood.

I hope that helps!
