  This change of mind could be an opportunity to learn more about
  color. How about making the scene in tones of greens that would be
  the afterimage opposites of the reds in the apples, enhancing the
  intensity. That would be generally what I would describe as a more
  colorful experience than reds vs. grayscale. Try some tests in
  Photoshop. Put red apples over several backgrounds and see what makes
  them redder.
