How about the 100+ art galleries in Laguna Beach? That's a distinctive  
and nationally significant marketplace, right up there with Carmel and  
Santa Fe. A lot of it is right on the sidewalks, too, and sunshine is  
highly likely.

Another suggestion - the 99 Ranch markets, huge mall-like Asian food  
stores, several in your area (and one in mine, El Cerrito).

Los Angeles also has the teeming garment district (officially the  
Fashion District). I shot a couple of panos there last year:

The marketplace I would really like to see done in Southern California  
is the early morning produce market (or one of the two flower markets)  
in Los Angeles.
