GPL is a very different thing indeed from Creative Commons. In a
nutshell, the 'problem' with copyright law has been that if someone
wants to use something you've made they *have* to get in touch and be
given permission - even if you're happy for others to use the content
in certain ways without being asked first.
Creative Commons is a way for someone to state, up front and without
having to be contacted first, exactly how a particular bit of content
is allowed to be used. There are different allowances that can be
stated, and these cover pretty much the full spectrum of
possibilities.
The GPL really is aimed squarely at code-slingers and is intended to
help software development progress in general open-source directions.
Creative Commons (or CC for short) is intended to be usable with
*anything* that is covered by copyright law, and can be used to allow
*any* normal combination of different usage allowances/restrictions.
CC isn't a license in the GPL sense, it is simply the author saying
how their work can be used. It doesn't require giving up any rights
and it doesn't interfere with regular copyright law, or the moral or
legal rights the author has.
Did you read the article in the URL I posted? Seriously, please do.
It should help clarify things.
